I have an older vehicle which has an electric coolant temperature sensor located in the thermostat housing. It is a negative coefficient sensor (NTC)wherein the resistance of the sensor rises as the engine gets cooler and falls as the engine gets hotter. The gauge on the dash measures this resistance and indicates the temperature by a needle. My question is, given using the same resistance sending unit, will the gauge read differently if the truck is a 6 volt than it will if the truck is a 12v?

the guage will be diferent. the guage is set for 6 volt , and putting 12 volts will make it read saying a diferent temp or possibly burn the guage out itself. If you are changing over from 6 volt to 12 for best results change all things that had run off 6 volt system or There are things out there in diferent auto websites such as year one ,that do reduce the voltage in order for accessories to work properly
