check engine light; engine faultering

My SUV is a 2000 Jimmy SLT with 89,000 miles; 4.3 engine v-6; 4 wheel drive.
Check engine light comes and goes. Jimmy uses excess gas; chokes, then runs well.
So far we have replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, battery,catalytic converter (and pre-catalytic converter was removed and replaced with pipe only).
Prior to these problems, Jimmy had few needs.
Any ideas?

hey there , if you want to fix it right the first time have the codes checked , even if the light isnt on there should be history , sound like an 02 sensor possibly

Jim,
Thanks for your message. Since the O2 sensor was changed, the engine runs better, but the light is still on and it hesitates to start. Will have it checked again for more codes. This is getting very expensive. Encouragement?
