When I attempted to start 2000 Jimmy, it failed to start and the key would not return to the lock position. It will rotate as if to start, but will not rotate all the way back. Of course, now the battery is dead, and will not recharge.
I've never heard of this kind of problem??????

Is this a column shift or floor shift? If it's a floor shift the problem could be the key interlock solenoid. If it's a column shift it could be the mechanical interlock. It could also be a bad cylinder assy.

To get the key out you can pop a small plug under the steering column housing trim. Then you insert a pen or similar object into that hole and push up on the plunger to release the key. The plug is oval shaped and just pops out of a hole.

Thanks for your response. The fix was much easier than the ignition switch, etc. I replaced the battery first, and that remedied the problem. I had no idea that a dead battery would stop EVERYTHING from working, including turning the key to the position needed for removal.
