How does it shift going forward? If you re also missing second gear it could be the sun shell.

Not good. That is typical behavior when the sun shell fails. The only recourse is a transmission rebuild or replacement. GM got a bad batch of them from a supplier but nobody knows which transmissions got them and which got the better ones.

Shows the probable part. If you look close at the picture you will see teeth inside the small end. Those teeth strip out and you lose second, fourth and reverse. The transmission will rev up in first, shift to third and lockup the converter. But you lose the other gears.

I am buying a 2001 JImmy from a friend, she said that it doesn't go in reverse.

I am in desperate need of a vehicle and she is only asking 350.00 for it.

do you think it is an easy repair?

When I put automatic transmission in reverse 1/3 of the time it runs perfect, other 1/3 it doesn't work other 1/3 will only work if you lightly feather the gas to make it work. A gal at work said she had identical problems with her jimmy and they replaced a small part and she said it was called sun well or sun shell or something like that. Can you please help, thanks

My transmission lost reverse and was making a noise so I replaced it with a used transmission. The new to me transmission does not make the noise, but still no reverse. The fluid is at the correct level all forward gears work fine with smooth shifts. Please help!

Sounds as if it is an internal problem, trouble is that you have no knowledge of the used transmissions history, if you got it from a wrecker they should replace this with another unit, the only thing you can do in the interim is to ensure that the transmission is actually selecting reverse at the box, make sure that the selector is located in park and ensure that the selector is knocking back one notch and engaging reverse.

Is it at all possible that there is any other explanation? I really do not have the time or the patients to do another swap as I would be doing it by myself or the money to get another transmission.

If you have drive and the oil is correct, and the transmission is selecting reverse externally the problem will be internal of the transmission, you can get a line pressure test and see if there is any electric connection tests to do, but these will have to be done by a transmission work shop as special tooling is required that you may not have access too.

When the automatic transmission is put in reverse there is a clicking sound than seems to be coming from outside of the engine. It stops when the automatic transmission is put in drive and moves forward. The sound is slightly more dense than tinny and only happens in reverse. The automatic transmission functions well and when last changing the fluid and filter there was no metal residue in the pan. The clicking sound happened before the transmission fluid change. The clicking sound seems to be coming from outside of the engine or transmission. The heat shield on the catalytic converter feels tight but it could be inside. Perhaps the innards of the catalytic converter are broken? It may be something that torquing the engine over by placing the transmission in reverse effects.

check the U-joints on driveshaft first. if you see rust around seals or if have driveshaft off it will feel lumpy and they can click. could be something hanging up in disc brakes as well like a stone etc.

Transmission problem
1995 GMC Jimmy Four Wheel Drive Automatic 186000 miles

When I start my car cold (sitting overnight) in the morning it has two problems: 1. When put in reverse the car will not move right away as if it is in neutral and then eventulally will move, and 2. once in drive, as the automatic transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear, it slips and the rpms rev up as in neutral. I must come to a complete stop in order to try to drive the car and accelerate very slowly to prevent this from happening. BOTH problems seem to go away as the car is driven for approx 20-30 mins and gets really warmed up . I bought the car as a 2nd car and dont know much on the history and dont want to dump tons of money into it but dont want to be robbed by a dishonest transmission mechanic as well. Thanks

have the transmission fluid and filter changed. with the cold weather the filter might be a little clogged and when its that cold the fluid gets thick, slowing down the circulation.
