My 1998 Chevy Tracker (your Chevy drop-down doesn't list Tracker, so had to click on Geo) has developed a really annoying sqeak-type noise right behind the dash panel. Even though I'm a girl, I know its the speedo cable because it gets more intense the faster I go and stops when the car isn't moving. I've traced the cable but can't access it to lubricate it behind the dash panel, even with my small hands. Do I have to drop the whole steering column and dash panel to lubricate the speedo cable?? Seems as though there should be an easier way than that! Can somebody tell me how to lubricate the cable, or must I start driving with earplugs? So far, it doesn't seem to be affecting the actual performance of the speedometer...no bouncing or anything...its ust that blasted noise! I'd appreciate any help, if I have to break a nail, so be it! Might need to remove the gauge cluster to better access the speedometer cable. Then install some engine oil down the cable

Well if it is just squeking and your gauge is still working properly than all you need to do is lubricate it. If your speedometer is not working properly and you hear the noise then it will need to be replaced.

I have a 96 Geo Tracker with about 150,000 on it when i got up this morning and started to drive the car i heard a strange noise coming from the dash around the speedometer suddenly it jus went from the normal speed i was going to 100 then when i slowed down it went back to normal but as soon as i tried to go over 35 it acted up again so im no sure if its the Sensor or the Cable

Open the dash up and investigate the speedo head and cable-probably came loose or worn drive.

Are you talking about the part of the cluster that the cable goes into? That is a gear set that changes the rotation of the cable to the proper speed for the speedometer to display.

If that is the part that you are looking for then you will need to locate a replacement cluster and they will most likely have installed and you can remove it.

If I am not understanding what you are looking for, can you get a picture of the part and we can figure out next steps? Thanks
