I had my car in for a water pump replacement, they also replaced the valve cover gasket and an O-ring on the distributor. The car ran fine, no timing issues whatsoever in over 2 years. The timing belt had been replaced approx. 20,000 miles prior by the same shop. 2 days later the car was towed back in (wouldn't start) they tightened up the distributor. 4 days later the car died and I had to have it towed back in again... they called me several hours later to inform me that the pin that holds the crankshaft & pulley together had sheared off and that I needed a new engine $3500 to $5000. I know that in replacing the water pump they had to remove the timing belt. Could having set the timing REALLY wrong or not seating or tightening things properly have caused the pin to shear off?

If the timing was set wrong you would had problems running it or starting
my suggestion would be to have a third party look at it and give you an opinion on what is the possible cause
you say a pin may be some thing else looking at it by a trained eye may reveal something else
hope that answered your question
good luck

look at this car. They both agree that the shop did a "bad" job which caused this problem. I have a lawsuit pending and need something in print from certified mechanics, to send to the Judge, as to whether or not the sheared "key" was caused by installing the timing belt wrong. Your reply was a "no brainer". I already knew that answer. The car is in rural AZ and I have recently moved to N. CA. There is no one who can take care of this for me there.

Sorry I can NOT give you any written proof, that they did you wrong ,
that was the no brainer answer that I gave you and I will say it again
you need to have it looked at by a third party
need your receipts from the shop it should serve as a proof
good luck
