I have a 1005 Geo Prizm and i need to change the back brakes,the exhaust fom the converter to the muffler and i would like to change the fuel filter. For someone who wants to learn about cars how long will they take me ,where is the fuel filter located and what is the best way to do all this. i'm low on funds so i woud like to try it all myself.

Your best investment would be $16 for a Haynes manual. You can also see if the factory manual is available. I bought a factory manual for my '91 Prizm on ebay for $4.95 plus $5.00 shipping. The Haynes manual is a good resource and has procedures for all the repairs you mentioned.

If that was supposed to be 1995 as the year, your Fuel filter is located on the fire wall, on the drivers side. You wil have to remove the air intake hose from the intake manifold to access it. Be sure to use backup wrenches on the fuel filter when taking out the "banjo" bolts in the ends.

The filter is located in the engine compartment placed ahead of the fuel injectors at the fuel feed pipe

I am trying to locate the gas filter on my 1991 Geo Prizim and want to replace it. It is fuel injected and a 4cyl - 1.6 model. Can you tell me where it is located? I have visited different stores and my gas filter looks like a small oil filter with a vapor return line, contrary to what they are showing me. I am guessing it's under the power brake booster.Can I be looking at the wrong part? I'm confused.

Also, where is the fuel pump located?

The filter is under the charcoal cannister, bolted to the firewall. Easiest access is to remove the front wheel (drivers side) and acces it from the steering rod hole.

The filter has a banjo bolt on top and a double inverted flare on the bottom. The lower fitting can be hard to get to, use a flare wrench.

There are no vacuum lines attached to the filter, yo may be looking at the cannister, which has two vacuum lines, one small and one large. You should remove the cannister for easier access to the filter

You were exactly right. Thank you! It looks like it was never replaced so I'm soaking it in "Liquid - Wrench" for 2 days and will take it out. I know the lines can twist easy and are probably rusted.

I was looking at the charcoal cannister filter and mistook it for the filter.

You are more than welcome, may I suggest a product called "PB Blaster" as a much better penetrant.

As you can see, it's in prestine condition with only 78,000 miles on it. Everything is relaced, even the timing belt to the radiator! This should go 200,000 miles for sure with Castrol oil and a detergent such as CD-2. I have been using it since a kid and reccomend it. I changed my oil last November and added it. In April when it was drained, it looked like new oil. Good stuff and I highy reccomend it!

I am trying to locate the fuel filter in a 91 Geo Prism. Can anyone tell me where it is located?

I was given the right advice but reccomend that you soak the bottom line real good with the PB I was told to use. I used Liquid Wrench and it never came loose.

I took the induction (air intake) off and loosened the top line rather easily. After that, I tried loosening the bottom line. I never got it off and wound up in the shop. It's because that fitting is exposed to the ground and elements and makes it tough to get off. The firewall bolts that hold the filter in place are cumbersome to get off but wit a little patience and scraped knuckles, you'll get em' off.

Don't do what I did. Use the PB penetrant and let it soak, soak, soak.

What a dumb design, that filter should be exposed on top!

The bottom fitting is a double inverted flare connector (like a brake line) and you do not want to strip the head.
So if you ever take a brake line off, use the PB and let it soak, also do not use any teflon tape on these connections or thread locker.

Follow fuel line from the connection on the fuel rail (a flexible rubber hose) to the fuel filter. Usually located on the firewall under the cannister. You can see it better by removing the drivers side stone shield and wheel.
The top connection to the filter is a banjo bolt (note position of copper washers, new filter should come with new washers) and lower is an inverted flare connection (you would need a tubing wrench).

As far as performance, change the filter, if still laggy, then check fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge and spark.

My husband and I attempted to remove the fuel filter in our 91 Geo Prizm, but were unable to get the bottom flare nut off - we took it to a reputable mechanic, and they also could not get it off, and had to cut the line.

They since have not been able to replace any type of filter with any combination of clamps or lines or o-rings, etc. because to my understanding that bottom flare nut leaks heavily with any filter they can use that accurately attaches to the top line. The Chevy Dealer in town was unable to give them any advice on parts besides the possibility of metric measurements, which the mechanics were aware of.

Any advice you can give? They've essentially told us they can't replace it, so now we have a car that's been in the shop for over two weeks with no fuel filter nor any options of having one installed so that it's safely driveable.

All they need to do is using a Double flare tool place nut flare nut on tube then use tool to make double flare. Tell MUST be double NOT SINGLE flare.

Thanks - I called and the said they actually had a double flare on the line, and it still leaks from the bottom of the filter (and they've tried different filters).

If it weren't the fuel line, I'd tell them just to weld it, but I don't think they'd be up for that option.

Check with Toyota and see if they have a replacement fuel line, if not go to junkyard and remove from donor car, 90-92 Prizm or Corolla.

I am having problem when my car first starts to drive - if i give it to much gas it bogs out and wont accelerate! also it is very slow and delayed as i accelerate. once i get past 45 mph the car has no poblem picking up speed or getting enough gas or whatever it may be - well i lied it does get a little funky and stutter if i really get on it (trying to accelerate from 50 - 65 faster than usual) If you have any idea what the problem could be or what i could look into to solve this problem please let me know - also i would love to know what part or parts i need how much they would cost and how much for installation... ball park estimate is okay. thank you

You will have to get the fuel pressure checked with a mechanical gauge, this can (generally) only be done by Toyota or someone with the special tool set required to measure it.

I would go ahead and change the fuel filter, if you can, if problem persists, you will need to start as I mentioned above, fuel pressure first, then ignition if pressure is OK.
