I believe the problem is the speed sensor. I found what i believe to be the variable speed sensor on the transfer case. It has one small bolt that i removed but I found that it has two wires that run down into the transfer case and are connected to something in the case. Several questions here. Is this the variable speed sensor or something like the knock sensor? It seems as though I can reach the rest of the vss thru the transmission pan, is that true?. I am even in close to the problem or should I be looking else where for my speedometer problem fixes. The sensor that I am referring to is on top the the transmission cased near the transmission mount.

for an inaccurate speedo, checking the vehicle speed sensor is the correct way to go. a diagram is below of the location (left front of transaxle).

I looked at the area indicated for the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), but I could not find it. I removed the air-filter container, but the area is still covered by bundles of electric wires and coolant tubes. Do I have to remove more parts?

You might need to remove or just move wiring and hoses out of the way. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

I cannot locate the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
I removed the container for the air cleaner and could locate the back-up light switch on the transmission.
In which part of the transaxle is the VSS located?
I assume that it can be accessed from above.
What is above the VSS if it cannot be seen from above?
