The shifter moves freely without the brake engaged, but the vehicle says it's in reverse so it won't start.

Good morning,
It sounds like the cable has either broken or came off where it hooks to the transmission.
Open the hood and look under the battery. There should be a cable that attaches to the top of the transmission. Make sure it is connected.
