Gear shift handle will not catch or go into gear, it slides from the top to bottom

I am unable to place car in any of the motion positions due to problem with gear shift handle that will not go into gear. This occurred about a year ago. The road service guy came out and used a kitchen garbage bag tie to connect it underneath the vehicle and it maintained until now.
