Gas shuts off when going freeway speed, code p0500

I have this problem I’ve tried fixing on my car listed above GSR model. When I’m driving on the freeway at around 65 mph, I feel a jerk then I nothing happens when I step on the gas. When I put the car in neutral it’ll start revving up and down about 1,000 rpm's. I’ve tried getting a new battery, distributor cap, and fuel filter but nothing has solved it yet. The check engine light is on and the only trouble code it produces is p0500. My speedometer doesn’t work, but I don’t think that is the problem. I think it’s a fuel problem, but at this point I’m pretty lost.

That code P0500 is for your VSS vehicle speed sensor. I've attached a picture below on how to test. Here is a tutorial on how to test wiring:

I would replace the vehicles speeds ensor here is the location. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Hi Ken,

I replaced my vss and nothing happened. It still has a CEL and the speedometer doesn’t work. I haven’t tried driving it on the freeway but I assume it’ll just stall again.

This can be a connection issue or the PCM is out and needs to be replaced, lets check the wiring before replacing the PCM. Here is a guide to help with the testing and the wiring diagrams below so you can see how the system works. They call it a main shaft speed sensor on the last diagram.

First I checked the VSS connector and at least one of the pins was corroded. I was able to put a new one on but the check engine light was still on showing p0500. Next I tested the wiring in the PCM and the gauge cluster. I couldn't find the wire that should be for the VSS, but when I did some wire repair in the gauge cluster the p0500 went away and p1337 replaced it, saying my crankshaft fluctuation sensor was completely out. The person I was working with said it could be related to the distributor, which I will be replacing this week.
