Gas pedal has no effect

The automatic lights on my car did not turn off when I left the car in airport parking for two days, so the battery completely drained. Was able to jump the battery, but it took several attempts to get the car started. While driving home the check engine light came on and the accelerator quit responding. The car ran at at idle speed (about ten mph) until I could get someplace to pull off safely. I left the car overnight and when I came back to it the next morning to call for a tow, it started up and ran normally. I was able to drive it home without a problem, but the check engine light is still on. Do you think the battery is the most likely problem? It is Sunday and all the mechanics and dealerships are closed, so I am trying to diagnose the problem as best as possible before moving it again.
