Fusible link burnt out

Hi,

For some strange reason, I'm not finding info on a 1997 Impala in either of my manuals. Ugh. The only thing I can find is a 1996 SS with the 5.7. Is that the engine size you have?

As far as the problem, does the starter engage at all? If it doesn't, that isn't a fusible link issue. There are two wires to the starter, a larger one from the battery (not fusible) and a smaller one to the S terminal (not fusible).

I attached a pic of the wiring schematic from a 1996 SS. It should be similar.

Yes, my engine is a 5.7 and I tested the larger wire from the starter which the light turned on when cranking the ignition. so what does that indicate on the problem at hand?

Hi,

The larger wire at the starter should have 12v at all times. The smaller wire (should be purple) should only have 12v when the key is in the start position. So, if the large wire has constant power and the smaller wire has 12v with the key in start, replace the starter.

Let me know if that is what you found. I'm asking because you indicated you found 12v at the larger wire. You didn't mention the smaller one.

The smaller wire has no power running through it at all when turning the key.

Okay, then we need to check a couple fuses. (also, make sure it won't start in neutral).

I attached two pics below. Please keep in mind, these pics are for an 2006 SS, so even though they should be similar, they may not be exact.

The first pic shows the schematic and the two fuses I need tested. The second pic shows the fuse box under the hood. I don't have a pic of the interior fuse box crank fuse. Check to see if there is a label on the fuse box cover indicating fuses.

Aw man, I just noticed I told you the wrong year! It’s a 1979 Chevrolet Impala! My bad! I don’t think that messed me checking everything you told me but maybe you have a schematic closer to that year. I was starting to wonder why everything was complicated. I’m sorry !

That makes a big difference. LOL I have no schematics related to this simply because of the model year.

Here is what I suggest: I am going to need you to take pics and send them to me and hopefully I'll be able to guide you. Is that a possibility for you?

Alrighty,what type of pictures from the car would you need ?

First, have you checked all fuses? Are you able to locate a starter relay?

As far as pictures, I need to see the fusible link that you are dealing with. You mentioned it went two different directions. I would like to see where it is going.

Please bear with me. This won't be quite as easy without a wiring schematic. I'm surprised there is nothing listed for me. I jumped ahead a few years and didn't find anything until I made it to 1985. I attached that starter system schematic. See if it resembles what you have.

I see one side of the fusible link going toward the starter. Where does the other side go?

I can’t really see where else it goes to because it joins with a bunch of other wires into a tube thing to cover the wires.

This is going to be a tough one without knowing and not having a wiring schematic to review. If you go to the alternator and move the larger wire, do the wires in the harness move as well?
