Cannot open the trunk on my convertible car

I am unable to open my trunk on my convertible beetle. I have read to check the fuses 14 and 144. Do I need a tool to properly check them? Also if I do need to replace the motor in the trunk does it need to be from VW or will an aftermarket be okay?

Let's check the fuses first. here is a guide to show you how to check for power with the fuse locations in the diagrams below:

I have also included the trunk latch assembly so you can see how to change it out. I would use OEM parts they seem to work better. Check out the diagrams (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.
