After driving the car for about fifteen miles, the muffler got hot enough to melt the carpet in the area over the muffler. The car was running rough and lack power.
I was told to do a fuel pressure test and a compression test. When doing the fuel pressure test I got 34 psi with the key on. When I started the engine fuel squirted out of the fuel pressure regulator, so I turned it off and did not get a running value. I did the compression twice. One with the engine cold (1-4,120,110,120,110) and at operating temp(125,130,140,120). All my fluid levels were correct, but the oil appeared to be a little thin and smelled like gas. Also when I turned the key on fuel leaked from the small hole in the top of the FPR.
Can anyone out there help me with this problem?

it shouldn't leak out the FPR first so you need to change it.if this is tbi your fuel pressure should only be 14=16 psi. once you change fpr see if it's lower if not then there may be a blocked return line. also change your oil after you get it running.

That is part of thr plan. Once I change the FPR and the return line, I will do a complete tuneup am also going to replace the speed sensor since I have been getting a code 15 when I pull the codes.

I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and re tested the pressure. It remains at 35. To 40 psi's
still ran rough and lacked power. So, I looked deeper into the throttle body, and found a displaced o-ring on the fuel injector.
When I removed the injector the o-ring was in the bottom of the injector housing. I fished it out and put it back on the injector. The vcar had its power back and ran a lot better. But the o-ring was loose on the injector. I know I should replace it. But hate to buy a whole package just for 1 ring. What I need to know is, will the o-rings zi can get at the hardware store will work on my fuel injection system?

none auto is different due to alcohol in fuel.
