Brought my car to my mechanic because when it was parked and running it shut off and would not start up again. He said everything seemed fine except he did not hear the fuel pump grinding. He put a new one in. He hears this one but my car still wont start. He disconnected something and said that when he tries to start the car gas should be spitting out. It is not. He is stumped which scares me. Said he is going to double check everything tomorrow and if everything seems fine he is going to exchange the pump and hope that he got a faulty one. Does anyone have any idea what he should check?

He should check the fuel pump relay and check the for fuel pressure. there have been issues with the distributor and crank sensors on the year also.

But if it was the relay would he also not hear the new pump?

It is possible the pump is defective, but sometimes you cannot hear the pump if it is working fine.

Meaning the original pump might have been fine?

In the meantime let me also ask this. The mechanic wants me to come by in the morning and pay him for what he has done. Again, the problem has not been fixed yet. Do I pay him?

You should only pay once the vehicle is fixed. So for now you should not.

if he is trying to collect money from you even now the car is not fixed. That might be a red flag. you might want to take it to a Chrysler dealer yes it might be more money but they have the knowledge and tools to figure out what is going on with your car.
