Fuel problem

I was driving and suddenly the car stopped taking fuel and started stalling, so I turned it off, waited for ten minutes. drove again where it worked fine for couple miles then same problem. I stopped beside a gas station and added fuel but there was already fuel in the tank and it was not empty. Anyway, when I added more fuel the car worked normally again, so is it a fuel pump failure or overheating?
