In the tank as part of the pump assembly. This guide should help us fix it but I have included the diesel filter gas filter replacement in the diagrams below.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-change-a-fuel-filter

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

My truck has the engine check light on.My truck starts fine and runs okay, but only if I give it gas slightly. If I try to give it more gas to pick up speed faster it wants to shut off. so I'm thinking it is the fuel filter that has never been changed out. what do you think is it probably that or something else? I was planning on changing the fuel filter out first. I have seen your video on YouTube of removal of fuel filter with the gasoline coming out. I was told you can disconnect the fuel pump electronics underneath at the drivers side door area and start your truck and just let the fuel inside get used so you do not have gasoline on you. What do you think of that idea?

First, here are the directions for fuel pressure release. The attached pics correlate with the directions. Check out the diagrams (Below).

1. NOTE: The splash shield is located on the LH frame rail under the driver side door.

Disconnect the splash shield and position aside.

2. Disconnect the electrical connector.
3. Start the engine and allow it to idle until it stalls.
4. After the engine stalls, crank the engine for approximately 5 seconds to make sure the fuel rail pressure has been released.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
6. When fuel system service is complete, connect the electrical connector.
7. Reposition the splash shield and install a new pushpin.

8. NOTE: It may take more than one key cycle to pressurize the fuel system.

Cycle the ignition key and wait 3 seconds to pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks before starting the engine.

9. Install the diagnostic tool. Turn the key ON with the engine OFF. Cycle the key OFF, then ON. Select the appropriate vehicle and engine qualifier. Clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and carry out a PCM reset.
10. Start the vehicle and check the fuel system for leaks.

Next, before replacing the fuel filter, confirm that fuel pressure is low. Here is a link that explains how that is done.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-fuel-system-pressure-and-regulator

Here are the manufacturer's specs for fuel pressure.

Item .................... Specification

Fuel Pressure
Key on, engine off .................... 240-310 kPa (35-45 psi)
Engine running .................... 193-310 kPa (28-45 psi)

If you want to replace the fuel filter, here are the directions. The remaining pics correlate with the directions.

Removal and Installation

WARNING:
- Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
- Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before servicing or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing a fire hazard. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
- There are 2 fuel systems, an early and late build fuel system. The early build system uses a 7.9 mm (5/16 in) fuel line and connectors. The late build uses a 9.5 mm (3/8 in) fuel line and connectors. Do not interchange the 2 fuel line sizes or components because fuel leakage will take place causing a fire hazard. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Release the fuel system pressure.
3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
4. Disconnect the fuel filter inlet fuel tube quick connect coupling and fuel filter outlet fuel tube spring lock coupling.
5. Remove the fuel filter from the fuel filter bracket.
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- If a tie strap was removed, reinstall a new tie strap in the same location.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Here is a picture of the tool you will need. I bought this one at O'Reillys for $3.99. Don't count on them to let you know you need one before you break the clip inside one of the hoses. FORD won't sell you just a clip either or even an individual hose. I had to buy BOTH new hoses from FORD for $112.00. Last NEW FORD I'll ever own. Good luck.

I am finally done with installing my rebuilt 5.4 liter motor into my 1997 F150. I decided it was a good time to install a fuel filter. The first quick connect (the one towards the back) came on with minimal effort. The front side took me hours. When it finally came out a black metal or hard plastic ring came out with it. Is this bad? I managed to pry the ring off of the old filter. I tried just slipping it on to the new filter. But it will not fit inside. Any advice? Thanks.

No, it is not a retaining clip. It came from inside the quick connect fitting and was stuck on the nipple of the fuel filter.

Just had the same thing happen to me. Fuel filter had not been changed in a long time, part of the connector seized/rusted onto the filter and stayed behind when the connector removed. Leaked badly when reattatched. Wound up getting towed to the local garage, they said they can repair the fitting without changing the fuel line. I guess changing the filter more frequently would prevent this. I found changing the filter to be a pain, especially getting the filter out of the bracket once disconnected.

So I went to change the fuel filter on this truck and it looks as though the last guy to change it used the wrong filter as there is no gap between the filter and the line to get the line removal tool in there. There is room for a Flathead screwdriver or a hacksaw blade. Should I just cut it out and use the tool to pull the male end of the filter out of the fuel line.

I bought truck for a friend 4 mo. ago. was running fine. Started it regularly. 6 weeks ago started loping at idle. Friend backed out on deal last week. Had bad fuel. Would not run . Emptied tank , checked pump, changed primary filter, Idle air sensor, Sp. plugs. Runs butlopes when idling. No vacuum problem. Need advice. Have mechanical experience on Carb's but little on fuel inj. Could it be EGR related or is there another idle controller/sensor I don't know about? Thanks!

OK there is only one fuel filter on this on this truck there is no primary or secondary. You did change the filter that looks like a large can right? Now what I would like you to do is get some throttle body cleaner and lean the throttle body out really good. Let me know how it works. You will need a digital multi meter to do some test from here. Fuel Filter.

Do you mean pull the throttle body and soak in throttle body cleaner or is this a spray cleaner you use while the engine is running?

Ok get some throttle body cleaner and rags. Put a couple of rags below the throttle body and first with the throttle closed spray it out. Now open it and spray it down some more and use another rag to wipe it out real good. Now you can go ahead and start it and see how it runs.

Hello,

This sounds like it could be a fuel filter problem. The fuel when it is pumped from the fuel tank passes through a filter before it makes it to your vehicle's fuel rail. When this filter gets plugged, then little to no fuel will make it to your vehicle's engine. Here is a link for you to go to:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-change-a-fuel-filter

In the diagrams down below I have also included the factory instructions for the removal and installation of your vehicle'
s fuel filter. Please go through these guides and get back to us with what you are able to find out.

Thanks,
Alex

Where would I locate the fuel filter for the F-150 Custom I have just acquired. In the morning it runs great, sometimes in the afternoon after driving it for a lot of miles it will start to sputter, and backfire. Then it will stop running. you can let it sit for a while and it will start but run as if its running out of gas.
Next day it works fine. Any ideas?

In the frame, under the truck, under the driver seat area, hidden by the fuel tank - if you have dual tanks.

Mine was ruptured with rust - AND -- I discovered the dam thang had special connectors -- requiring a special tool -- that didn't work because it was so rusted.

So you know what I did? I Hacksawed off the connectors, bought a 3$ WalMart gas filter ( 9$ otherwise) and some rubber hose from Autozone, and clamped in the new filter!

Runs perfectly!!!

and no special connectors!!!!
