I have a 1999 Ford Winstar with 102000 miles. It has a 3.8L V6.

When I move the shifter from P to D there is a noticeable delay before the transmission engages first gear. There is no delay moving from P to R (or from D to R for that matter). When the transmission is hot (stop and go driving for instance on a hot day) the delay seems greater going form P to D and the engagement is especially noticeable (hard). There is no slipping in any gear and the van appears to operate (shift) normally otherwise.

One other note: I did not have this problem until the van had 36000 miles on it and I changed the transmission fluid for the fiirst time (I do this every 36000 miles) using the recommended Mercon V.

Thanks you for your assistance.

Might be a bad seal on the trans filter. Worth dropping the pan and looking
