I have a 1999 Ford Windstar with about 110,000 miles, 4 cylinder. In the last 2 years we have replaced the transmission and recently had another $800 worth of work on it. Shortly after the $800 my car started needing oil added between oil changes (we change the oil every 3-5K miles). My oil has now been completely empty twice in the last 4 months - since the last repair work.... any ideas what could be causing it to burn oil so quickly?

Probably not burning it, probably leaking it. Check coolant and see if i is turning black, feel it and see if i is slippery, that would mean oil in the water, possibly blown head gasket, head or block.

Check for spots on the ground under the car where you park.

There is nothing underneath the car, no leaks at all. I will check the coolant. I think we had the head replaced in December. I need to find my invoice and see what it was for.

[quote:49d9cca9c0="justanold"]HELLO! You say that you have a 4 cyl? not in a windstar friend. 3.0 or 3.8 V-6 were your choices. now on to your concern. if you have a 3.0..follow the dipstick tube down about 6in..you should find a brace coming off the tube and firmly connected to the exhaust manifold. wiggle the tube..it shouldn't move. if you have a 3.8..same thing except it connects to the cylinder head. if you find a concern in this area return to the dec. repair shop and have them fix their screwup. please get back to me with your results.

Sorry, you are right it is a 6 cylinder, 3.8. Checked the brace attached to the dipstick and it was not loose. I do, however, have oil in my coolant - probably a very expensive head gasket repair!

The 3.8 is such a nice torquey engine, too bad Ford totally f'ed up the design leading to these head gasket issues,,, I hope you haven't trashed the lower end of the motor also.. also knmown for repeated motor mount breakge due to weak design of motor mounts and the engine's torque output...
