1998 Windstar P0340 CMP sensor

OK - I have a feeling this may be a job for Justanold if what I am doing right now does not fix it. I have an intermitten problem on the van. Periodic surges/hiccups, primarily at 'cruising' speeds. Seems like if I am driving and then hit around 35mph-45mph and the tranny goes into OD, then I will get the hiccup. I don't notice it as much as the wife, probably because I am heavier on the accelerator than she is. :-D
Anyways, I am having the CMP sensor replaced here at the Ford dealership, but in the event that does not do it (this van seems to like to have 'weird' problems) then what kinds of things should I look at getting done on it? What kinds of things should be checked? I'm at the dealer now and waiting for them to finish up, so I can post after they complete and let y'all know if it fixes the issue or not.

OK, so, the car seemed to drive pretty well for a while after they replaced the CMP sensor. Drove it for about 15 miles, stop and go and some highway. Had some mild hiccups, but not bad. So, I shut it off and turned it back on and the MIL came back with a code P0340 (Cam sensor malfuction).

I googled around a bit and found a couple of things regarding this. One described my problems exactly and said to run the vehicle with the alternator disconnected. I did that, still no fix. Also, Justanold helped me with getting my speedometer issue squared away and then the CEL came on after that, so I even tried it with fuse 35 pulled just to see if things were related and they are not. So, now, here I am trying to figure out what kinds of things can cause this problem. My obvious choices are:
1) Plugs and wires replace
2) Take to Ford to reprogram/update the PCM (There's a TSB out there regarding my vehicle, from what I can tell)
3) Take to Ford and have them diag it (which requires a fair amount of bending over, if you get my drift).
Anyone encounter anything like this before? I've seen tons of posts regarding this code and I have seen people replace plugs, wires, EGR, etc. etc. and I don't want to get into thousands of dollars of replacement stuff if there is a last step I can try first :-)
