Six cylinder front wheel drive automatic 202,000 miles.

Where is the speed sensor located on a 3.8 liter engine?

Hello,

The VSS is located on the trans-axle at rear of engine.

A question for you why are you changing it?

There is also a turbine shaft speed sensor or TSS which is located on top of trans-axle.

vehicle speed sensor is located on the top of the transmission. you cannot see it without a mirror. i tried going through the cowl and still could not see it.

the proper way to replace it is to remove the exhaust y-pipe and heat shield. but that is a big job.

here is an easier way, if you are flexible:

working from underneath the vehicle raised securely on jackstands, if you reach up on the passenger side of the transmission (towards the rear) behind the exhaust pipe and header (just past the heat shield) you can feel the 10mm bolt holding it and a wire coming out of it. it is facing the front/drivers side.

you can use an extension and access it from the drivers side while guiding the socket with your other hand touching the bolt. a 1/4 drive universal is helpful. once the bolt is free (do not drop it) you need to push out the sensor. i found it easier to reach between the engine oil pan and front side of the transmission and push while pulling the sensor out.

then bring it to the drivers side so you can see the plug connector and release the catches. those break easy because they get brittle, use care, remove from vehicle. some have a cable but mine did not.

remove the c-clip on the little plastic gear carefully, inspect the gear for any broken or damaged teeth before installing it onto the new sensor. i am told those are difficult to find so do not mess it up.

installation is reverse of removal. always be careful of those lines running to the back, the brackets, shield and stuff can have sharp edges, it will scrap up your wrist and forearms good.

Sorry i have no pictures, as i said, you cannot see it.
