1998 Ford Windstar Engine Starts, Can change the gears, but

I was driving and suddenly the car stalled, The engine turns on, and I am able to change the gears without difficulty, but the van would not move, what can be the problem, I showed it to someone and they said you may need new transmission, while one of my friend thinks the 1998 ford had a trnamission sensor and it might have shut off, can you please help by guiding what can be the proble mand what to do?

First step is to check the transmission fluid, on level ground in park with a hot engine. Then read the codes with a scan tool, post all codes found. If it is a shift solenoid or module, there will be a code. Hand held scantools are cheap and a good tool to have since by Federal law, all cars since 1996 must have OBD II connector!
