1997 Ford Windstar Oil Pan Gasket

1997 Ford Windstar 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 182K miles

I recently noticed that my oil pan may be rusting through. I purchased a new one from Ford and they sent me a tube of silicone to use as a gasket. I tried to get a gasket (preferably cork) from Auto Zone and NAPA. Neither place had access to a gasket, just the tube of silicone. Is that gasket available from anyone, or will I be safe enough using the silicone?
Also, it appears that I just have to remove the starter in order to remove the oil pan, or do you think the exhaust pipe may have to be removed too?
The engine is a 3.8L.

Yes, the exhaust will need to be removed. I would also use a good silicone, I prefer GMS (General Motors Sealant) found at Chevy dealer. Get all surfaces real clean and oil free, this stuff is like glue, works great,let dry as long as possible before starting or filling back up with oil

Thanks for your help on this subject. What I still don't know is, are there any cork gaskets available for the job and wouldn't that be better than silicone?

If the dealer and two parts stores dont list one, then there probably isnt one. Be sure to get it real clean (carb or brake cleaner) or the silicone wont stick
