engine knocks

The first guy missed the issue. He fixed the cams and the top end but never addressed why it happened. You had a lack of oil from either an oil pump or main and rod bearings.

If he would have done the complete engine rebuild, you might still have the same engine running well.

The engine does run strong while it's cold. I hear no tapping.
I believe that problem has been fixed.
Trying to figure out the new problem.

Okay, but you have an oil pressure issue. that is where the sound is coming from and what caused the damage.

Can you post or upload a video of the noise?

Did either shop check the actual oil pressure?

Yes, I had an oil pressure check done a week before the engine was pulled. 55 PSI at idle. So we didn't replace the oil pump. It was explained to me the oil channel through the head to that particular area of the camshaft was clogged. they said they cleared the clog. I am inclined to agree with them because I do not hear any tapping. I just hear the fuel injectors firing now. Engine sounds great at idle... I let it idle for 2 hours in the driveway. no problems. The heater works air conditioner works the fan comes on....

Okay, then they need to test it when it gets to operating temperature.

They missed something or it would not be making noise.

asemaster.... I'm going to guess you have not run into this problem before so you can't offer any real suggestions other than to take it back to the mechanic that is telling me to just swap out my engine now after $4,000.00 worth of work.

I have run into these issues many times. I have done engine work for over 30 years.

The shop is correct about needing a motor. When the engine gets hot, the oil pressure drops out and the engine is knocking. That knocking will get worse and eventually fail the motor.

I have offered the suggestion. The oil pressure needs to be checked when hot and if it drops out will either need an oil pump or the main and rod bearings have excessive play. When the oil is cold it will have higher pressure until it thins out.

Check to make sure the engine oil is full and clean. If it is, check oil pressure. If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned to identify a trouble code that should point you in the right direction for where the problem is coming from. Most parts stores will scan it for free.

My 2004 Ford Explorer has engine knocking when you take it to 2RPM+.
I've poured the 2 bottles of solution down the gas tank and no result.
Everything else is fine - pressure, oil level, etc.

Here's the kicker - the Check Engine light hasn't come on.

Are you sure its engine knock that you are hearing? True engine knock increases with engine load not RPM. If it gets worse when you give it gas from low RPM’s while in gear the its likely knocking but if it does it in neutral when you get above 2000 RPMs then I don’t know what it could be. Anyway generally there are only three things that can cause knocking assuming you are using the recommended octane fuel. The first is higher than normal compression but this can only occur from either engine modifications or a huge build up of carbon in the combustion chambers. The second is the ignition timing being off but in all cars built in the past 15 or 20 years the timing is controlled by the ECU and cannot be changed. The third would be using spark plugs that are several heat ranges too hot. Also in the old days if the engine coolant was way too hot more knocking would occur but modern cars seem to be able to compensate for this. Anyway assuming you are using the correct spark plugs and the correct fuel I would say a bad sensor is causing the ECU to set the ignition timing incorrectly. Of course modern cars have knock sensors as well which should detect knocking and back off of the ignition timing accordingly so you might want to check your knock sensor as well. If any sensors are bad the ECU sould give you an error code. By the way those octane boosters sold in the auto parts stores are a waste of money and probably wont even boost your octane by one whole point.

I got up one morning drove my son to practice my ford explorer was fine. I stopped and got my brakes fixed and truck was still fine. I drove home when in the house for about an hour. I started my truck up and it just started knocking and shaking. No warning or anything. I am hoping that it is not the engine. There is oil in the truck. There were no warning lights on. No smoke. It still starts. It is just still knocking. Could I have thrown a rod?

Where is this knocking noise emitting from?

All I know is that it sounds like it is coming from the engine. The engine light is flashing on and off now.

Have it scanned for code/s and also try to locate the knocking noise

Along with the engine knocking the quages are jumping as well. Its like the truck cant tell if there is any oil in there or not, but it is, thoe it is also time for me to get a oil change

I would be getting the oil pressure tested with a mechanical gauge, this will give a true indication as to what the actual oil pressure is.

I certainly wouldn't be driving it that way at all. It the knocking has started, the damages is done and the obituary is already written.

My explorer ran hot now engine knocks when idling and driving it run good no oil in cooling system no coolant in oil.

If it is a knocking, can you tell if it sounds low in the engine?

It sounds like its at the top out side the motor

I need you to try something. Remove the serp belt and start the engine to see if the sound is gone. NOTE: Only run the engine for a few seconds to see if the sound it gone. Do Not run it longer than needed. It will overheat again.

If it sounds outside of the engine, chances are it is one of the accessories.

Let me know what you find.

no it still knocked it did not seem as loud I also tried Taking plug wires off one at time on # one clylinder it was very light if any

Okay, when you removed the #1 plug wire, did the sound stop?

yes pretty much you can hear it just little idling

If the noise goes away when you remove the wire, then my guess is a rod bearing or wrist pin is bad.

A friend had a 1997 Ford Explorer with 215,000 kms given to her and 1 month later she started the vehicle to warm it up and 10 min later the engine was knocking and oil was sprayed all over under the hood. The temperature was -15C that day. Is there anything problem areas that can fail to cause this problem? I was asked to take a look at it between Christmas and Newyears to see if I can see what failed.

I need to know where the oil was straying from. If there was a knock, chances are a low oil level cause a bearing issue. As far as the leak, again, I need to know where it is coming from.
