1988 Ford Truck No Heat Engine Runs Hot

Heater and defrost blows out only cold air. Engine hotter than normal and would overheat at high RPM. Radiator is full. Coolant sprays out to engine when temperature is high. I am not sure where it is coming from but I think at the radiator cap. After turning off engine, , I can see a lot of steam coming from the radiator cap. One heater core hose is hot. The other hose is cold. I started smelling coolant in the cabin a few weeks ago. Can a blocked heater core cause overheating?

Most definitely. The smell in the cabin is the coolant being blown in because of the faulty heater core. You may also notice a film on the windshield. You can bypass the heater core if heat is not needed. Otherwise, the job is usually very expensive at a garage. If you need replacement instructions for doing it yourself, just ask and I will post them for you.
