I have replaced the serpentine belt on this 2000 Taurus (101552 miles, 3 liter V6) 3 times and the belt works for 250 - 300 miles and the edges shred again and finally breaks.
A Ford dealer also replaced the belt twice and again the fraying belt and breaking.
A/C on of off makes no difference
Replaced idler and tensioner
Replace alternator
Checked all pulleys for dings etc.
Checked pully alignment
Using a good year Gatorback belt

The customer is back with the edges of the belt beginning to fray anter 150 miles.

Can you help please - we are at the end of our resources.

Turns out to be a very worn power steering pump shaft (pump never leaked). Shaft was shifting more than one groove width on the belt and caused the belt to shift and shred.

[quote:aee872f1b5="justanold"]HELLO! What you describe is a problem with the pulleys. remove the belt..now go to each grooved pulley and count the # of grooves. one may have only 5. i think this eng. has 6. if they count out right then check to be sure the correct alt. was installed. if the alt looks to be correct then suspect the pulley that came with it. they can vary on alignment setoff. let us know what you find. 8) 8) 8)[/quote:aee872f1b5]
