gear shift goes thru the gears but transmission is not engaging,, was working fine,, shut it off,, came back later to drive it,, and nothing,, no gears are engaging

with engine off,check to see if shift arm is moving on transmission. have some one shift while you watch under hood. your cable could have come loose/broke somewhere. most likely at shift lever itself or at trans cable clamp. also check trans fluid level while running.
