I seem to be having a problem with the idle on my 93 Ford Tempo. What it is doing is after I put the car in neutral or park after driving, the idle stays higher then it should and doesn't go back down. If I put my foot on the gas, it'll rev but then stay reved and idle at that higher RPM. This doesn't seem to be happening when I first start the car.

Any idea whats wrong and how to diagnose and fix the problem? Let me know if further information is needed.

Thanks.

Sir

Check the idle air control speed motor/valve and also might want to clean out the air bypass and throttle body. Oh! also the throttle position sensor.

I'll be here when you comeback-tell me more what's happening and what you have tried.

Sorry for the late response. The car has been doing it on and off and I haven't had the chance to take it in yet to see whats up.

I'll definitely check out what you suggested and report back. Is this a seriously expensive problem? Doesn't really sound like one.

Thanks.

It can be expensive with crooked technicians looking for that extra Benjamins. So watch yourself

Have them check for code/s can lead to something

Get them to check the throttle position sensor 1st -am hinting on this one.

If it is indeed the sensor, is that a hard thing to get to on this car? If not, my dad could possibly do it (he used to be a mechanic), saving me time & money.

I'd like to get it checked out anyway, and if its not too expensive go ahead and just have them do it, but saving some cash never hurt either.

Thank you for your help again, its appreciated.
