To shift or not to shift...

I have a 1998 Taurus SE 3.0L V6 DOHC. The trans would not shift out of 2nd gear at all. It would not even downshift to 1st when I came to a stop. I then ran the shifter through all the gears (incl reverse) while the vehicle was stopped. This seemed to fix the problem-for now. There were no codes when a technician scanned the PCM for any problems.

The transmission was rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. The fluid & filter were changed yesterday.

Could it be a bad transmission sensor?

Did it happen right when you picked it up from the filter change?? Could be a mechanical issue, a lot don't show up as retrieveable codes, if it were a sensor, pcm would pick it up... I just replaced the trans in my 99 dohc, 65k miles. planetary gearset fractured, no warning, I was and still am mighty po'ed about it.. I called Ford Motor Co. and my dealer and told them both what I thought of their gd transmission self-destructing at low miles,,, they, the dealer, did say that there was some type of 7 yr extended warranty in certain instances, my car wasn't eligible.. however if I wanted, I could bring my car there, have them diagnose and fix it, then apply for assistance from Ford... a case-by-case basis, maybe, most likely not, some type of financial help not full coverage though.. I told them to scratch me, in no uncertain terms.. had it done for 1450 dollars including a trans mount that broke when the gearset fractured, and oil seal..

It happened after about 300 miles of driving. It only lasted about 2 or 3 minutes and then shifted normally. Drove it last night and had no problems.

I had an independent garage repair the trans. The owner is very honest and does great work. He has a Ford transmission tech rebuild his customer's transmissions. Mine was rebuilt in April 2006.
