i just purchased a used 1996 ford taurus gl with 100,000 miles. as i was driving it home on freeway, at about 55 mph, a VERY loud "howl" came from the front right tire. as soon as i applied the brakes it stopped. then after a few miles it started again (this time at a slower speed). as soon as i brake, noise stops. tires seem to be in great shape and the rotors look smooth. any ideas??

your tire probably has a belt shift. install it on the other side to see if the noise moves
