We have a 1997 Ford Taurus GL with 139,000 miles. We purchased this vehicle off of someone who was leaving to Iraq, but failed to tell us the problem with the catalytic converters. When we went to have it smog tested, it failed and we are told to replace both of them. We have been getting prices everywhere and the cheapest we can find is $600 a piece (not including labor). Is this correct? It isn't worth fixing if that is the case. What do you think?

You have a few choices:

You can buy a bolt in OEM for less than $400 ea or buy a universal and have it welded into the existing pipes.
