I have a 1999 Taurus with over 126,000 miles.recently i have heard a squealing/chirping noise . The noise stops if you apply the gas.

Hey pharmguy,
Sounds like it may be the serpentine belt, with the engine off, inspect the belt for wear and cracking in the inner part of it. If you replace the belt be sure to spin all the pulleys/components by hand to ensure they all spin free and are not making any noise! Let us know!

Hello,
I had the same problem on my 2002 Ford Taurus SES with only 67,000 miles. I went to the repair shop and they guessed it was a bad idler pulley and serpentine belt and they replaced the items. They were wrong and I was out $200 and still the problem exists. Finally, I took it to a Ford Dealership (Quality Ford) that I trusted and heard good reviews from my peers. The dealership did a diagnostic test and found the cam synchrozer was bad and replaced it. Since I still had my CPO (Certified Powertrain)Warranty which covers until 75,000 miles, it only cost me $100 deductible and the diagnostic fee was waived! Check to see if you have an ESP(Extended Service) Warranty and this is even better than the CPO Warranty.
If no warranty, the cam synchronizer is around $140 and diagnostic is around $70 plus labor.
