1997 Ford Taurus 3.0 6cyl 175k miles has hesitation/rough idle and hesitation during acceleration. Somewhat intermittent. When at idle the roughness often occurs only when ac is on. Engine never dies but comes close at idle.

Engine may hesitate during mild acceleration, but seems to stop at higher rpms as when hitting passing gear.

I have replace plugs/wires, IAC, and fuel filter. The fuel filter was replaced by a Fast Lube and i dont think i had noticed this problem as severe or as frequent before it was replaced, but not sure.

Thanks for any help.

Is the roughness like an engine miss or a vibration? Might want to check the motor mounts if it is a vibration.Did the Fast Lube also do the tune up?

The roughness is definitly like a misfiring. Almost as if a plug wire was unplugged. I changed the plugs and wires a few weeks after the fast lube did the tune up.

I have noticed that early in the morning or very late, when it is cooler, it seems not to do it nearly as much or at all. I was wondering if o2 sensor, mass air flow, or coil cap? may cause symptoms like this. Any ideas?

thanks for your help

Also, when car is in park or neutral it does not miss. As soon as you put it in drive, rpms drop a little and it begins to miss. Seems like turning on AC or putting any torque on engine causes it to miss.

thanks for your help

Sounds like ignition if it begins to miss under any load. What kind of plugs and wires did you use? Could be an ignition coil going out or a weak injector as well. Does it idle real low? Check Engine Light on?

Thanks very much ! Im glad i checked the plug wires again before i rebuilt the engine. I found a plug wire not adequately connected.

Problem solved !
