You don't have to remove the manifold you can get a few ratchet extensions with a little play in them taped together with spark plug socket and remove them

I did replace the spark plugs on my Taurus 02 without a problem. I did it with a 5/8 " extension and a normal Craftsman 8" wrench The one in the middle (back in the middle) is the one that takes a little more time. I recommend you to use original Motorcraft ones. I wanted to use another brand and it didn't work well.

Remove Upper intake manifold removed for clarity. Remove the ignition coil-on-plug. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt. Remove the coil and plug.

The diagnostic reading showed that I had three spark plugs that were misfiring. The mechanic says that it will take two hours to replace spark plugs because the back three are located behind the manifold. My boyfriend says that he can replace them but I was leary about letting him take the manifold apart. Is this a simple process?

You shouldn't need to remove the intake to do this, unless it is the taurus SHO. The 3.0 vulcan engine has enough space to reach back from the sides. You can't see them, but you can feel them. This is why it takes so long to do. It's just time consuming and sometimes frustrating. The most he would have to remove is the air intake tube. Two can be reached from the driver's side, the other from the trans side. Good luck, let us know if you need more help.

Hi Tami,
Here are a couple videos. I assume you are asking because you may have to remove the intake to do the rear? There are tricks but sometimes it is easier to just remove it.
My car is a 1996 Ford Taurus LX, I was driving in a passing lane and all of a sudden my rpm went up to 4000 and then there was a bad smell. I pulled over and there was little smoke but not bad. When I looked at the exhaust it was coming out in puff clouds and was actually making a putting noise. I had my husband change the spark plugs and he found one that was not firing and we changed that plug. Now it runs worse than before. My husband thinks that there is a piston that has no fire going to it. Now what?

Start with the basics. Verify with a spark tester that the spark plug is not getting spark. Since your ignition system fires the cylinders in pairs, if one fires and the other does not, there is a possibility of a shorted coil pack.
This guide will help you change the spark plugs correctly.
Also a compression test would be in order. Bad compression will also cause a cylinder not to fire.
Smoke from the tailpipe can also indicate a problem with a head gasket or intake manifold gasket.
