shift cable replacement

I can t get the car to shift out of park. I looked at the cable that hooks to the transmission and it it broke in two places under the hood...Would this cause it not to come out of park and how do I replace it. Do you know how much a cable would cost if I bought it from an auto store.

Here is the information you requested. I've attached picture steps below on how to remove and replace the automatic transmission shifter cable for both a column shift and floor mount shift version. How do I fix the linkage that goes to my column shifter? it broke somewhere and my car will not shift into any gears, but I can manually shift on top of the transmission. so my linkage has broke somewhere.

There is a shift cable that can break causing the problem you are describing. Below are some diagrams so you can see whats going on.

Someone kicked my boyfriends gear shifter in his car. It broke something the shifter is still attached to the column but it easily moves up and down and the car will not go into any gear. Is this a broken shifter linkage? And how can I check to find out or how do I remove it to replace it?

There is a shift cable in the column that has a somewhat weak connector. I suspect it came off. Here are the directions for removal and replacement of the cable. See if it just came disconnected. If it broke, it will need replaced. The attached pics correlate with the directions. Check out the diagrams (Below).

Removal

1. Remove the LH lower instrument panel trim.
2. Reach up from the left side of the column, then using a small screwdriver, pry the shift cable from the shift selector lever pivot ball.
3. Remove the shift cable from the retaining bracket by carefully lifting up on the locking tab while pulling up on the shift actuator cable fitting.
4. From the engine compartment, remove the cruise control actuator.

5. Pry the cable grommet from the dash panel.
6. Remove the nut holding the shift cable to the manual control lever.

7. Lifting up on the locking tab while pulling up on the shift cable, remove the shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket.
^ Discard the locking clip.
8. Pull the shift cable through the dash panel opening.

Installation
1. Follow the removal procedure in reverse order, using a new locking clip. Adjust the shift cable.

I have never had any issues with the transmission then I went and started the car and when I shift into gear nothing happens

First check under the hood at the top of the trans to be sure the shifter cable isn't broken. It should be moving the arm in the picture I attached below (right below the air filter box), if not check the transmission fluid condition and level if okay check TPS,VSS and transmission range sensor-if it continues bring her in-

linkage may have broken or needs adjustment. if it feels lose in the column - linkage. If it feels like it normally does when you shift out of park and still goes no where, it could be the torque converter or bigger trans problems.

How to Replace shifter cable?

Removal: Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove speed control actuator cable (if equipped). Remove three screws and upper steering column shroud. Insert a scratch awl into the access hole located in the bottom of the lower steering column shroud. Push in on the ignition lock cylinder release pin, rotate the ignition lock cylinder clockwise to the RUN position and remove ignition lock cylinder from the steering column tube. Remove lower steering column shroud. Remove two screws and knee bolster from instrument panel. CAUTION: Before lowering steering column assembly, completely loosen the shift indicator adjustment mechanism and disconnect the shift indicator cable and adjustment mechanism from the steering column lever to avoid damaging the shift indicator assembly. Rotate the shift indicator adjustment wheel clockwise until enough slack exists to disconnect the shift indicator cable from the steering column lever. After the shift indicator cable is disconnected, continue to rotate the shift indicator adjustment wheel clockwise until the shift indicator cable can be pulled through the adjustment wheel and the adjustment mechanism can fall away from the steering column tube. Remove two nuts and steering column absorber. Remove two nuts and lower steering column assembly. Disconnect shift cable ball-stud from steering column shift lever. Remove shift actuator cable fitting from steering column bracket. Attach mechanics wire to the selector lever end of the transmission shift cable. Remove one nut and disconnect shift cable from manual control lever. Remove shift actuator cable fitting from shift cable bracket. Dislodge shift cable grommet from dash panel and gently pull transmission shift cable through dash panel from engine compartment side being careful not to pull mechanics wire completely through dash panel. Remove two bolts, one nut and shift cable bracket from transaxle. Installation Install shift cable bracket to transaxle and secure with two bolts and one nut. Tighten bolts and nut to 20-26 Nm (15-19 ft. lbs.) . Attach mechanics wire to transaxle range selector lever end of shift cable and thread opposite end of mechanics wire through dash panel and into passenger compartment. Gently pull shift cable through dash panel and into passenger compartment side until shift cable grommet can be seated into dash panel. Install shift cable into shift cable bracket and secure with shift actuator cable fitting. Connect shift cable ball-stud to steering column shift lever. Connect shift cable to manual control lever and secure with shift cable-to-manual control lever nut. Do not tighten nut until shift cable has been adjusted. Secure shift cable in steering column bracket with shift actuator cable fitting. Raise steering column assembly into position and secure with two nuts. Tighten nuts to 13-17 Nm (10-12 ft. lbs.) . Install steering column absorber and secure with two nuts. Tighten nuts to 13-17 Nm (10-12 ft. lbs.) . Thread the shift indicator cable through the shift indicator adjustment wheel and connect the shift indicator cable to the steering column lever. Rotate the shift indicator adjustment wheel counterclockwise onto the shift indicator adjustment mechanism and install into position. Adjust shift indicator as necessary. Install knee bolster to instrument panel and secure with two screws. Place lower steering column shroud into position and insert ignition lock cylinder into steering column tube. Install upper steering column shroud and secure with three screws. Adjust transmission shift cable. Place transaxle range selector lever in (D) position. Tighten shift cable-to-manual control lever nut to 17-23 Nm (13-17 ft. lbs.) . Install speed control actuator cable (if equipped). Install air cleaner assembly. Connect battery ground cable. Check transaxle operation in each range. Make sure park mechanism and Transmission Range (TR) sensor are functioning properly.

shift cable is off of column bracket and all how does it mount?

I attached the diagram and the instructions. They are not extremely detailed so let me know if you need more and I will see if I can find a video or something else. Also, maybe get pictures of what you are dealing with so we can get on the same page as to what has to be done.

Front wheel drive automatic.

My sister was backing out of the driveway. When she shifted the gear out of reverse the linkage let go. When I crank the car and put it in gear, the column shifter slides fluidly. When I shift it from under the hood on the transmission by hand, it shifts into gear. I was wanting to know where I can get a shifting linkage diagram so that I can track down the problem? Can you send or refer where I can get a diagram? Thank you.

Check the link bolts if loose it is almost above the brake paddle lower shifter. Check shifter cable too.
