to figure out what is exactly wrong with your vehicle i would like to know what the exact code is in p***** format. without that i cant tell you what is possibly wrong unless you want me guessing

i changed my tps twice and reset the computer maybe 3 or 4 times and the check engine is still on and says my tps is bad. its causing my tranny to shift way too high rpm and is continuing to rev as im coasting down the road. what do you think is wrong with my car and how can i fix it?

You need to test the wiring of the TPS back to the computer for open/short if okay -get the computer tested.

I have a 03 ford Taurus i was having idle issues and changed the TPS now the RPMs go up to 3000 while accelerating can somebody help? i just changed the TPS today and now the RPMs shoot up really high when accelerating.

check the throttle cabling for sticking.check that it was installed properly on the right setting

Adjust the TPS sensor's closed and wide open throttle also check the IACV and MAF sensors-

when repalcing the tps, does the throttle need to be wide open ? i have went to 2 different auto parts stores & got 2 different sensors. one would need to be installed with throttle wide open & the other at idle speed. is there a difference between the tps on a dohc & other v6 ? i have the dohc model.

Removal & Installation Disconnect Throttle Position (TP) sensor from wiring harness. Mark throttle body and TP sensor for reassembly reference. Remove mounting bolts and TP sensor. To install, align tangs on TP sensor with blades on throttle shaft and install sensor on throttle body. Align marks on throttle body and TP sensor. Secure TP sensor to throttle assembly with retaining bolts. Reconnect wiring. Nothing about holding it wide open...not sure if the sensors are different, but probably not...

hi, i have a 99 taurus DOHC with a Duratec engine, vin type s. i have been having a problem with the car cutting off when i stop at lights or a stop sign or anytime i have to stop period. i replaced the o2 sensors that were bad, then the altenator, power steering pump and pulley and i am still having this problem. we also changed the throttle positioning sensor but i don't know if it is on right. do you have any suggestions for the problem and can you tell me how to properly put on the tps? thanks.

Check the TPS closed and wide open throttle voltages and also the idle air control speed motor/valve and the EGR .

I was looking under hood and found the TPS sensor cracked. I replaced it and reconnected everything. I started engine but the idle started racing, i disconnected the plug attached to the tps and idle went back to normal idle. I plugged it back in and idle started racing again. It sounded like the jet was spraying when the idle went high. Can you help? Is it possible that the sensor is defective?.

You should replace it-its cracked and check what made it crack-could be internal short that heated it up-Investigate-Also its not adjustable. Check for shorts and open on the wiring.

Hi there.. I installed a new TPS on my 2001 Ford Taurus SEL w/ 25,000 on it. Now I'm getting a DTC P1120 "throttle position sensor out of range". What does that mean? The repair book says the TPS is not adjustable. :?

Are you sure you installed it correctly. These are usually spring loaded and have a tang that catches on the throttle shaft. If you didn't put it in the proper position and then turn it slightly to get the mounting holes to line up, you may not be riding on the tang to get the proper readin. Usually the instructions that come with it or the service manual will tell you how to do this.

Or... you could have a defective part.

I think I installed it wrong... I basically just placed the TPS in and mounted the screws..

Sometimes you have to use a voltmeter to get the correct setting, the pcm is picking up an incorrect setting,, I always scratch the housings to line them up, most have been within range, luckily

Car will only start if throttle is held at about 1/3. Will sputter and die if let idle. Replaced fuel filter, throttle position sensor, distributor and checked the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, map sensor.
Thinking it may be cat. converter, but want to rule out anything else first. Any suggestions?

Have you ran a scan as yet? you don't always get a light up with all codes, also check for a vacuum leak, start here.

I haven't had a scan yet, I'm hoping to borrow one this weekend and run it.
I must have forgot to mention it in the original post but we did check for a vacuum leak. That was probably one of the first things we looked for, after trying to start it with the gas cap off.
Before the car quit running, I was getting a check engine light on occasion, while driving. Now it stays on while the car is running.
I'm trying to get it running again for as cheap as possible. I only plan on keeping the car until I get my income tax return and can get something more reliable.

We ran a diagnostic scan on the car sat morning and it gave an error something to the effect of;
Loss of ignition. Monitor spark from input to output circuit grounded.
We think it might be the ignition module. I bought some dielectric grease and another module from the junkyard that we're gonna try tomorrow, I'll update to let everyone know the results.
The module that was on the car won't fire at all and one that my uncle had will let it run but it's still not running right so it might be something else too. I'm not sure if his is good or not.

We had to replace the ignition module, air flow, 1 injector, 2 spark plug wires, throttle position sensor, map sensor, and adjust the timing. It's now running like a brand new car.
