Not a mechanic - just a guy with a Taurus. But none answered you so I will take a crack at it. The alternator is an easy fix. New alternators are more then re-manufactured alternators. There is nothing wrong with a reman. With a reman, you buy the part and pay a core charge and you get the core charge back when you return the broken alternator.
My 95 Taurus - the original quote was almost $700 but I laughed at it. The alternator is easy to get to - 3 or 4 bolts and adjusting of two belts. Should take a good mechanic 30 minutes or so ... no more than an hour. I wound up paying $325 for the reman alternator and labor.
Hope that helps
