Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Automatic 100000 miles

Bought used this last summer, some parts were replaced new including the alternator and battery. Now, it looks as though this problem has been there for awhile.

From the stop park position, car will start, then shut off, then will not turn over when attempting to start again. All diagnostics have been ran but no problems reported.  We have, however, traded the starter fuse with the cig lighter fuse with the car starting and functioning but then the problem returned a week later... Any ideas?

Start engine and try to hold the gas paddle down a bit
engine still stall or not \
if that keep engine running
check/clean IAC valve or replace
check engine for vacuum leaks check PCV valve hose for leak

My cigarette lighter dnt work how to tell if its a blown fuse

Easiest and fastest way is to turn on the ignition switch, (in case yours has to be on for the lighter to work), then use a test light on each fuse. They have two small holes on top to stick the test light's probe tip. If the fuse is good, the light will light up on both holes. If the light is off on both holes, that circuit is turned off and you don't know for sure if the fuse is okay. You're looking for a fuse where the test light lights up on one hole but not the other one.

A more time-consuming way is to pull each fuse out one at a time and look at them. You'll see a little curved piece of metal inside the plastic. A blown fuse will have a noticeable gap in the middle of that piece of metal and will usually have a big black spot around it.

My cigarette lighter keeps blowing fuses and will not work! Can u send me a wiring diagram or a way to solve my problem??

the only wireing is a power and a ground.
replace the wire and make sure nothing like a penny is inside of the socket.


if these fail buy a new lighter socket avail at most parts stores

The cigarette lighter in my 1997 Ford Taurus is always on ('hot'). As I use this for my GPS, I would love it, if I turned off the ignition, the power is also disconnected from the lighter socket.

Doing some research, I found out that in the fusebox, the lighter should be connected to fuse 20 / 5A / Integrated control panel, remote entry, cigar lighter.
Now I was thinking, would it be better to disconnect the lighter power-cable from this fuse and connect it to fuse 8 / 5A / Power antenna, radio control unit, GEM ??

If so, what wires should I be looking for and would it be easy to do? I do not have much experience with the wiring in this car (or any car!), so please go easy on me ohnoes.gif

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

The wiring enters a main wiring harness, and travels throughout the area under the dash. A more reasonable solution would be to run a new wire from an accessory tap on the fuse panel directly to the lighter socket.

actually got a good idea from our local oreilly auto parts;
The guy there suggested to tap into the power-supply wire from the car-radio (*), as this unit only will be used for my GPS and use a 2nd power outlet for this.
Came home and directly went to work on it.
Took me about 30 mins to get everything nicely / neat done and it works like a charm!
Now I have my (GPS) power outlet turning off when I turn my key off and the original cigarette lighter is not 'touched', leaving it 'hot' and open for it's normal use ;o)

(*)Note:
My radio has 2 power-supplies: 1 that stays 'hot' all the time for the clock + memory and 1 that turns on with the key only. Obviously, I used that one ;o)

HI,

The Cigar Lighter in my 2000 ford Taurus does not work. I have replaced the # 13 fuse (20A) in the fuse box, as it was burned , and still no power.

After replacing the fuse the lighter did not work, i also tried a phone charger, to verify, it did not work as well.

I am thinking maybe the lighter outlet itself is bad.
Any ideas?

If the fuse was bad, then there is a short. Did the new fuse blow or is it still good? THis may sound crazy, but make sure a penny or dime didn't slip into the receiver end of the component. I have seen that happen more than once. It causes the fuse will keep blowing.

If the fuse is still good, have you checked to see if there is power to the lighter?

I am having the same problem with my 2000 ford taurus sel but the fuse was fine and my obd doesn't have a connection

Please start a new question specific to your car, and be sure to include the correct engine size in case we need to look up a wiring diagram, and the mileage which we look at when making judgments. Unlike other sites where anyone can add a reply, this was a private conversation between two people eight years ago, and they are the only ones who will get a notice that there's another reply. To all the other experts, this question is listed as already having received a reply, so they won't see your addition of have a chance to answer. That won't get you the help you need.

Be sure to clarify your comment on the fault code reader. Is the plug for it missing? Is the plug different than the one on your code reader? Or is the code reader just dead when you plug it in?

To get started, measure the voltage on both test points on top of the fuse and include the results in your first post. That will tell us which way to start looking.
