2001 Ford Taurus car shakes like rpms are up and come down

when i drive my wife's car as i am backing up i feel hesitant on and feels like the rpm are going up and down. when i am in the high way i have no issues and runs great but when i come to a stop sometimes not all the time i feel the car jumping a bit feels like rpm go up and down.
