At normal highway speeds , the temo gage is about
half up, which I think is normal. When the traffic gets heavy and I slow down the gage shoots to the top. WHen we get going at regular speed again, the
gage returns to normal. What could this be?

My car did this too...First check your thermostat, its the cheapest and the easiest fix. if that doesnt fix it then check your coolant level. Also, do you have any white smoke coming out of the tail pipe? Any noises? This could be a head gasket, manifold gasket, or water pump. Please let me know if any of this was helpful. PS, Im just a person with similar problems, not a mechanic.
