i found out my alternator was bad today. the guy replaced the battery and the alternator from another ford taurus. Everything seemed fine until I was driving back home and all the gauges went down, radio turned off then my lights went out then my car completely died. Could this be the voltage regulator or possibly the wiring. What are the options on whats causing this to happen? Dont want to buy a new alternator then have to buy another because something was wrong elsewhere.

Are you sure the alt you got is good? As far as the regulator, it is part of the alt, so what I would recommemd removing the alt and having it bench tested at a parts store. Most will do it for free. If it is good, then I would suspect you have a bad fuseable link between the alt and the battery preventing the alt from recharging the battery.

Let me know what you find.
