temperature gauge goes all the way up

When driving, the temperature gauge goes all the way up to the top towards "Hot" but the light does not come on. Is this the beginning of a problem or Is there something that I need to put into the engine.

If the temp. gauge is showing hot but the engine is not actually running hot then suspect faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. Usually located on the rear of the engine block, near the thermostat.
