I have a 1996 Ford Taurus with just over 71K miles on it. Recently I noticed that the transmission stopped shifting out of first gear. I took it to a local shop and the mechanic told me that the transmission was "starting to go bad" and he had put some additive in the fluid to make it work for a while longer. It did then start to shift again, but this lasted for less than 1K miles before the same problem started again. This time I took it to a different shop and they could not diagnose the problem. They bypassed the computer to see if that would get it to shift, and no luck. They now want to take it apart to diagnose it, at a potential cost of $2K. Any thoughts on what the problem might be before I start to max out my credit cards again?
