Transmission problem
1996 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 80000 miles
Greetings from Australia. I guess trying to fix a Taurus transmission is a game of eliminate the myriad of possibilities. The symptom is that 1st and 2nd run fine but in drive and neutral the revs are limited to 4000rpm and it sounds like the engine in splurting. I will be going to an auto tech tomorrow to find out what the codes are. I have had this problem before and sometimes it resolves by resetting the computer. This time it did not fix. I find that when the engine runs rough or you go over a dip in the road that this problem activates.
My gut feel says that a sensor is likely to be a culprit. Maybe the engine can send a signal to the transmission saying it is in trouble and this is the transmission response.
One guy suggested that the MLPS is often the culprit. The code book suggests doing a transmission service which it may not have had done for a long time, certainly not since I got it at 96000k 60000m
