1995 Ford Taurus questioning fuel pump relay

Hi.. we just bought my son this car from a friend...who drove it EVERYDAY from Jersey to New York with no difficulty....it always had some slight difficulty starting but after 2-3 cranks it would start and run fine. But now sometimes it starts perfectly but very frequently it will not start at all........ we called a tow-truck because we gave up after 45 mins of trying to start....when the truck came, bingo it started perfectly. This happens very frequently , our mechanic can't find out what is wrong, but of course, everytime we bring it there, it starts without problems...any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Next time it refuses to start Do below immediately to determine if its fuel or spark issue

Get a carb cleaner and spray into the carb or the throttle body on an EFI. Did it start and die? If not disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs,distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors- Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it
