Ford 1986 country squire, 25000 mi, Doorgate

The doorgate lock activates electrically and manuallly but does not lock the doorgate. Mechanism seems to be intact... difficult to see into that part of the
doorgate even with access panel removed.
What is the likely problem?

There is possibly a rod that has come detached from the mechanism. Feel around for something loose.
