I have a 98 Ford Ranger automatic 4cyl 185000 miles.
I bought this vehicle fairly recently.

When I am taking off, first gear seems to go a long time (like up to around 40mph I don't know if this is normal) and then slams into second. It also slams into the rest of the gears. The slam is not really hard but it just doesnt seem normal to me. It only seems to happen when I am trying to go a little faster. There is no jerking, just a bit of a slam.
Also, only sometimes, when it shifts into 4th (overdrive?) there is a light vibration for a second. It feels and sounds almost like when you drive over thoses divits in the road to keep you awake.

I checked the transmission fluid and it is at the right level, but it looks a little dirty. Could this be the problem, or might the trans be going?

I'd have the trans flushed and the filter changed, it sounds like it might be pressureizing itself.
