Master or Slave Cylinder?

FORD RANGER

I have a 2002 Ford Ranger with 95,000K, 2.3L engine. Recently, the gears would not engage when the engine was on. Before it completely went out, the car would lunge forward. Now I can pump the clutch to build up enough pressure for it to engage, but this takes a bit of time. Is there a problem with only replacing the master cylinder and not the slave cylinder? The mechanics of course tell me that I need to do both because the slave might act up later, but this is rediculously expensive because they have to get into the tranny! What do you think?

I think you need to find out if it leaks...you could do the master and be throwing money away! But It could also save money for the short haul...
