loud noise

I have a 1985 ranger XLT 4x4 when i'm in neutral ,1,2,3,and 5 gears there is a loud noise like theres something loose but in gear 4 or when I have my clutch in the truck sounds fine.What is causing this noise?

it sounds like you may have a transfrecase problem. is this an electric shift transfercase.when you push in on the clucth all rotation in the transmission stops that is why the noise stops. have you had someone check all the fluids in the transmission and transfercase?(NOS) 8)
